Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk has sparked a bitter controversy on Twitter by proposing a peace plan for Ukraine with concessions to Russia and asking his followers for their opinion.
Musk’s plan includes repeating the vote in the regions annexed by Russia under UN supervision. “Russia leaves if it is the will of the people,” he said.
It also provides for Crimea “to be a formal part of Russia as it was from 1783, until Khrushchev’s error” and guarantees for the supply of water to Crimea. Ukraine will also “remain neutral.” “In the end, this will most likely be the result. The question is how many people will die before reaching it,” he said.
The American businessman has also warned that Russia will order general mobilization if Crimea is in danger. “Death on both sides will be devastating. Russia has three times the population of Ukraine, so Ukraine’s victory in the event of all-out war is unlikely. If you care about the people of Ukraine, seek peace,” he argued.
After the controversy generated, Musk has raised a simpler question: “that the will of the people who live in Donbas and Crimea decide whether they are part of Russia or Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, has responded immediately on Twitter with a poll asking his followers if they prefer an Elon Musk who supports Ukraine or Russia.
Zelensky’s senior adviser, Mikhailo Podoliak, has pointed out that there is “a better peace plan” that includes the liberation of all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea.
