9 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
A total of eleven migrants have died and one more has survived after a boat capsized in waters near the Moroccan town of Guelmim, near the Canary Islands.
Among the fatalities there are seven men and one woman, all of them Moroccan nationals, as well as a woman and a man accompanied by a two-year-old child from sub-Saharan Africa, reports the Moroccan media Yabiladi.
According to various Moroccan media, the objective was to reach the coast of the Canary Islands. The authorities have opened an investigation.
The Spanish NGO Caminando Fronteras published a report in December denouncing that more than 11,200 migrants have died or disappeared since 2018 trying to reach Spain.
It also includes a significant increase in the number of migrants who resort to the Atlantic route due to the increase in patrols and security in the Mediterranean.
