The local authorities of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, in the north of the country, have raised this Sunday to eleven the number of people killed as a result of the Russian attack carried out this Saturday against a construction hypermarket.
“Unfortunately, the death toll in the ‘Epicenter’ has increased to eleven people,” reported the region’s governor, Oleg Sinegubov, in a message published on his Telegram channel.
Previously, six deaths, 40 injured and 16 missing had been reported after at least two Russian aerial bombs hit a DIY hypermarket in the capital of Kharkiv.
Sinegubov explained the day before that at least two shells had exploded in the ‘Epicenter’ shop, which specializes in construction. As a result, the building, which covers 15,000 square meters, was left in flames after the attack, which occurred around 4:00 p.m. local time (3:00 p.m. in mainland Spain).
“There could be hundreds of people at the scene,” warned the governor, who also confirmed that the Emergency services had traveled to the scene and that all the victims were being treated.
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has lamented that “it is obviously a civilian target”, where there were “many visitors and workers”, and has highlighted that this attack is “another expression of Russian madness”, alleging that “only crazy people like (Vladimir) Putin are capable of killing and terrorizing people like this.”
Furthermore, Zelensky has linked this attack with the request for anti-aircraft help transferred to his Western allies. “We want to protect the lives of our people in the most effective way so that Russian terrorists cannot even get close to our borders,” he said.
