Eleven countries in the Americas reject Venezuelan Supreme Court ruling validating Maduro's reelection

On Friday, August 23, eleven countries from the American continent signed a joint statement against the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela, which ratified the victory of Nicolás Maduro in the elections of July 28. The countries, including the United States, demand the publication of the electoral records to recognize the victory of the president. The statement comes amidst accusations of electoral fraud by the opposition, days of mass protests and questions by organizations such as the UN and the Carter Center about the lack of independence of Venezuelan institutions. Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s Office announced that it will summon former opposition candidate Edmundo González for a criminal case against him, for his links to a website that contains electoral records according to which he obtained significantly more votes than Maduro in the elections.
