In a message to the community, Electronic Arts explains that it has decided to release a new app after listening to player feedback and recognizing Origin’s limitations “in a rapidly evolving entertainment landscape.” “That’s why we set out to create a next-generation EA gaming platform for PC—with a faster, more reliable, and more streamlined gaming experience—that would be the best possible place to enjoy EA’s amazing games, services, and content. EA,” says the company.
Electronic Arts has yet to set a timeline for the EA app to replace Origin as its main PC platform. For now we have to settle for “soon”. The publisher maintains that “EA app is our fastest and lightest PC client to date”, while its new simplified design allows “easily finding the games and content you are looking for and discovering your new favorite games”. The client also has automatic download of games and updates in the background.
Likewise, among the novelties of the EA app we find the option to create a list of friends by connecting the EA Account to other platforms and services such as Steam, Xbox and PlayStation. “You will be easily recognizable with your personalized unique ID,” explains Electronic Arts. “When you connect, you will know when and what your friends will be playing so you can join and play with them.”
Regarding the transition from Origin to EA app, the editor assures that his goal is to “make it as simple as possible”. All users will be invited to make the switch soon and by the time the invitation is received all games and content, including pre-installed titles, will be ready and available in the EA app. Your local and cloud saves as well as your friends list will also carry over. For MacOS users there are no changes and Origin for Mac will remain your client.
Whether the EA app will remain a requirement to activate all Electronic Arts PC games purchased on Steam remains to be seen. The remake of Dead Space is native to Steam, while in the file of the recently announced Need for Speed Unbound or the future Star Wars: Jedi Survivor Origin appears as third-party DRM.
