Sep. 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Nigerian electoral commission has approved a total of 18 candidates for the presidential elections scheduled for February 2023, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Lagos Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi.

The spokesman for the electoral commission, Festus Okoye, has detailed that the 18 registered political parties have presented candidates for the presidential elections, after the body published a preliminary list in June for the vote.

Thus, he pointed out that “the final list of candidates for the elections for governor and in the states will be published on October 4”, before highlighting that more than 1,100 candidates aspire to win the 109 seats in the Senate, while 3,122 candidates they aspire to achieve a position in the House of Representatives, where 360 seats are distributed.

“We ask all political parties to channel all comments on the list of candidates through the commission,” he said, ahead of the start of the electoral campaigns on September 28. The process will be marked by the increase in insecurity and the economic crisis, which have caused a deterioration in the image of the current president, Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari, who became president in 2015, will step down next year after serving two four-year terms. The president has faced growing criticism for the spread of insecurity from the northeast of the country — where Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) operate — to other parts of the north and center of the African country. .
