Those who were planning to play Elden Ring Nightreign with their partner may now be thinking about opening the relationship to a third person. FromSoftware has confirmed that the multiplayer mode of its next game will only support groups of three players, thus ruling out duos. The option to play alone will always be available. In an interview with IGN, the Japanese studio has also given details about the structure of the title and its accessibility, and clarified that in no case are we dealing with a game as a service.

Junya Ishizaki, director of the game, explains that Elden Ring Nightreign “has been designed to be played with a team of three people”, but that “you can also play it individually.” And as a couple? They ask him: “no, it is for one player or for three,” he answers. Ishizaki explains that as the development of the game progressed, they realized that three was the ideal number so that players could play on their own and cover the map, but also to enjoy a joint final experience. The goal is for players to feel a sense of accomplishment when they all manage to defeat the bosses.

Regarding the difficulty of Elden Ring Nightreign, it will be a more accessible experience, but equally challenging. No one should expect any type of assistance. “We trust our players a lot,” says Ishizaki. “We believe that anyone can be victorious, as long as they have an open mind and the willingness to try.” Even in defeat, you will get some relics to improve your character. This system should give players an incentive to keep trying it.

Elden Ring Nightreign includes bosses from Dark Souls and The Duke’s Dear could be one of them.

The structure of Elden Ring Nightreign is based on surviving a cycle of three days and nights by making decisions about combat and exploration. Ishizaki explains that there is only one map, Altolimbo, but that it will change radically each session. The map will experience multiple events that will significantly alter it, while defeating enemies and exploring the most dangerous areas will unlock more powerful weapons and improved rune rewards. At the end of each day a boss will appear and the game will end on the third night, when it will be your turn to fight the Night Boss.

Ishizaki is also asked about the risk of launching a multiplayer game after fiascos like Concord or Suicide Squad. The director of Elden Ring Nightreign says that they don’t usually analyze the industry when designing a game. Instead, they do something they are passionate about and enjoy playing, and their hope is that the players will enjoy it too. “Also, I want to make it clear that Nightreign is not a game as a service,” says Ishizaki. “When you buy Nightreign you get the complete package, everything can be unlocked from the beginning. It is not intended as a game as a service.”

Elden Ring Nightreign is scheduled for release in 2025 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam.
