Eight suspected terrorists die in a new attack in Benin near the border with Burkina Faso

Oct. 13 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Benin authorities have announced the death of eight suspected terrorists after dismantling a new attack in the north of the country, amid the deterioration of security in this area, located near the border with Burkina Faso.

According to information collected by the Beninese newspaper ‘Fraternité’, the incident took place at dawn on Wednesday in the city of Matéri, where a group of alleged jihadists tried to launch an offensive.

The security forces repelled the attack, which resulted in the death of eight suspects after the explosion of a bomb carried by one of them, while the agents also seized ammunition, weapons and communications material.

In recent months there have been several attacks in northern Benin, including an attack in February in a national park near the border with Burkina Faso and Niger that left nine people dead, including a French citizen, as authorities confirmed.

A report published in June 2021 stated that the north of Benin presents several of the conditions that have allowed jihadist groups to extend their inexorable advance in the Sahel countries, with their sights set on advancing towards the Gulf of Guinea.
