At least eight people were injured on Thursday when an anti-tank projectile fired by the Shiite militia Hezbollah hit northern Israel from southern Lebanon, amid heightened tensions following two days of coordinated explosions of the group’s communications devices, attacks blamed on Israel.
According to information gathered by the Israeli public broadcaster Kan, two of the injured have been taken to a hospital in serious to moderate condition, while the other six are in a mild condition, although the authorities have not yet commented on the matter.
Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place in a mountainous area in the northern Galilee region, stressing in a statement that the target was “a position of enemy Israeli soldiers.”
“The site was hit with appropriate weapons and was directly hit,” the group said, stressing that the attack resulted in “dead and wounded,” according to the Lebanese television channel Al Manar, which is linked to Hezbollah.
Earlier, the Israeli army had bombed “military buildings” and a “weapons depot” allegedly used by the party-militia in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has confirmed in recent hours the death of around twenty of its members, including a teenager, following the wave of explosions, which between Tuesday and Wednesday caused more than 30 deaths and more than 3,200 wounded.
The escalation of clashes between Israel and Hezbollah – a group supported by Iran that has significant military and political clout in Lebanon – has raised fears of the possibility of an expansion of the conflict in the Middle East. In this context, the Israeli army presented its “operational plans” regarding Lebanon to the United States last week.
