Eight of the eleven ministers of the Supreme Court of Mexico officially present their resignation

( Spanish) – The Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico announced this Wednesday the decision of eight of the eleven ministers of the high court, among them its president Norma Piñato present his resignation before the Mexican Senate. In seven of the cases, the resignation will be effective on August 31, 2025.

The ministers who made this decision are, in addition to President Norma Lucía Piña Hernández, Luis María Aguilar Morales (who concludes his term as minister this November 30), Jorge Mario Pardo Rebolledo, Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, Alberto Pérez Dayán, Javier Laynez Potisek, Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá, and Ana Margarita Ríos Farjat.

The decision comes after the promulgation of the controversial Judicial Reform promoted by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena), who obtained an overwhelming victory in the June 2 elections, and thereby consolidated his power in Congress, as well as the election of Claudia Sheinbaum, the candidate chosen to succeed López Obrador, her predecessor and promoter.

The implementation of the reform has raised criticism among experts ranging from economists to human rights defenders, who have expressed concern that the direct election of judges (one of the fundamental aspects of the reform) would consolidate Morena’s flattening power. It would further weaken its judicial system and damage the balance of power in Mexico.

Faced with criticism, Sheinbaum has repeated López Obrador’s arguments and has refused to reverse the reform.
