Eight Kenyan officers killed in mine explosion near Somali border

June 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least eight members of the Kenyan security forces were killed on Tuesday when a mine exploded as their vehicle passed by in Garissa county, located near the Somali border and an area where the terrorist group Al Shabaab has carried out attacks in the past.

The commissioner of the Northeast Region, John Otieno, has confirmed what happened, while a security report cited by the Kenyan newspaper ‘The Nation’ indicates that the bodies “have been recovered”, although “their identities have not yet been be determined”.

In addition, a group of members of the security forces escaped unharmed from another attack in nearby Lamu county, where suspected Al Shabaab members opened fire on a patrol with a grenade launcher.

Al Shabaab has carried out numerous attacks in Kenya and against Kenyan soldiers in the country in response to sending troops to Somalia, where they are part of a 22,000-strong peacekeeping force whose main objective is to guarantee the security of a country.
