July 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Egypt will host a meeting of Sudan’s neighboring countries next Thursday, July 13, in a meeting aimed at discussing ways to end the catastrophic conflict and mitigate its impact on countries in the region.
The objective of the meeting is to establish “new mechanisms” to help resolve the crisis in coordination with regional and international actors, the spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency, Ahmed Fahmy, reported in a statement, reported by Bloomberg.
In the note, the spokesman did not give details about the participating countries or the possible presence of the leaders of the sides in conflict, the head of the Sudanese Army Abdelfatá al Burhan and the paramilitary leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo alias ‘Hemedti’.
Fighting between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces broke out on April 15 and has continued for more than ten weeks, leaving hundreds of confirmed dead in its wake, although the total toll could be vastly higher.
Peace efforts in Saudi Arabia have not resulted in any meaningful agreements, and repeated ceasefires have been largely ignored.
The conflict has forced more than 500,000 people to flee the country and another two million to be internally displaced, according to the United Nations.
