Ecuador Receives US Help to Investigate Drug Trafficking Attacks

The popular neighborhoods of the city of Guayaquil have become the battlefield for drug gangs who intend to take control of them with the use of weapons.

So far this year, according to data published by the presidency of the republic, there have been 145 attacks with explosive devices and of these 72 were reported in Guayaquil and there are still 28 explosions where devices have been used that have not been identified.

To support the investigations, the administration of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, sent a team of experts who are already working at the site of the last explosion recorded in the Cristo del Consuelo neighborhood. Fausto Salinas, Commander of the Police assured that international support is important.

“And also all the international support that comes from the United States and other cooperation agencies for the Police is important to understand some pattern of behavior of this type of terrorists who use explosives,” Salinas said.

For now there is a detainee who pleaded guilty and whose cell phone contains messages in which he refers to the terrorist attack of the weekend. The suspect has a history of robbery and murder and was on probation with the use of an electronic device.

Meanwhile, Víctor Zárate, police commander of zone 8, which corresponds to the port city of Guayaquil, said that along with the subject they found long-range weapons and other explosives that were apparently going to be used in another attack on the Modelo barracks, where There are already several prisoners deprived of liberty belonging to criminal drug gangs.

“The threats have changed, today with the events that are taking place we will have to take the necessary repairs,” said Zárate.

The Government of President Guillermo Lasso made available to the families affected by the explosion an aid bonus of 250 for the next two months and also offered a bonus for the reconstruction of their homes of between 8,000 and 13,000 dollars.
