The Government of Ecuador declared this Thursday the Mexican ambassador to the country, Raquel Serur, persona non grata, following comments by the Mexican president about the Andean country, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry said in a document.
The Ministry pointed out as a reason the statements of President López Obrador regarding the 2023 elections in Ecuador and the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicenciowhich he described as “very unfortunate” in the statement.
Obrador spoke about Ecuador in his morning conference on Wednesday in which he noted that Ecuadorian candidate Luisa González, a protégé of former President Rafael Correa, was unfairly linked to Villavicencio's murder, and he blamed media outlets that he described as corrupt.
The measure taken by Ecuador is included in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and implies that the ambassador must leave the country shortly, although “it does not mean breaking diplomatic relations” between the countries, the Foreign Ministry specified in response to a request for comments. from Reuters.
González lost the elections to Daniel Noboa in October, while Ecuadorian society was still shaken by the murder, and the latter took office in November with a promise to combat drug gangs and control the growing violence.
