The government of Ecuador announced this Monday the closure of its consulates in Mexico and referred its citizens to offices in Guatemala and the United States.
“By virtue of the closure of the Ecuadorian consulates in Mexico City and Monterrey due to the decision of the Mexican government, as of May 16, 2024, attention to consular procedures will be carried out from the offices located in Guatemala City. , Houston and Phoenix” -the latter in the United States-, reported the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry in a statement.
Mexico and Ecuador became embroiled in a diplomatic dispute when police forces in the Ecuadorian capital broke into the Mexican embassy on April 5 and forcibly removed former vice president Jorge Glas, who had received asylum there hours before after being wanted for the crime. of corruption.
Mexico broke diplomatic relations with Ecuador and when closing its consulates, it directed services to the embassies of Colombia, Peru and Chile.
On the other hand, he reported that he requested the government of Peru to “exercise the consular representation of Ecuador in Mexican territory” to provide assistance to Ecuadorians who are in Mexico in a situation of “vulnerability”, a request that – according to the Foreign Ministry statement – has already would have been accepted.
The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry also announced that it has received the support of the World Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to pay attention to Ecuadorian citizens in a vulnerable situation in that country.
