The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has welcomed the resolution of the crisis in Burkina Faso, following the resignation of Lieutenant Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, as a result of the coup perpetrated this Friday.
“On behalf of the authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, I salute the various parties in Burkina Faso for having accepted a peaceful solution to their differences,” said current ECOWAS President Umaro Sissoco Embalo.
“I take note in particular of the decision of Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba to resign from his functions as president of the transitional government of Burkina Faso, in order to avoid a violent confrontation and a possible bloodbath”, added the also president of Guinea-Bissau.
In this sense, Embalo has emphasized the path of dialogue and peace. “I applaud the people of Burkina Faso and invite them to settle their differences through dialogue and non-violence,” he said.
In addition, he has demanded that the Burkina Faso authorities “respect the commitment made with ECOWAS.
The seven conditions set by Damiba for his resignation included the continuation of operational activities against jihadism, security guarantees for his person, the effort of national reconciliation and respect for the commitments with the Economic Community of West African States with a view to a transition process.
ECOWAS has announced, in turn, that this Monday a delegation will visit the country in question as part of its commitment to peace and stability.
The delegation will be led by Suzi Carla Barbosa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Guinea Bissau and President of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers. It will also include Mahamadou Issoufou, former President of Niger and ECOWAS Mediator for Burkina Faso, and Omar Alieu Touray, Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission.
