In mid-December, ECLAC’s Water and Energy Unit convened an extraordinary meeting of the Regional Group of Experts on Water Resources for Latin America and the Caribbean. The Group was formed last May, with the aim of joining efforts for the implementation of initiatives that accelerate compliance with SDG 6 in LAC.
In its role as one of the four Regional Commissions of the United Nations, ECLAC presented to the experts the topics that will be discussed next March at the United Nations Water Conference, to be held in New York. In addition, Silvia Saravia, Economic Affairs Officer of the Water and Energy Unit, presented the objectives of this Conference as well as the structure and outstanding themes, and the operation of the parallel events that will take place.
These side events will be an opportunity to share knowledge and solutions to accelerate the implementation of SDG 6 in the region, identify new and emerging problems, as well as exchange regional experiences. Thus, the extraordinary meeting of the Group of Experts made it possible to identify and share advances in the organization and design of said events.
Although some of the organizations that make up the Group of Experts will be present at global events during the UN Water Conference, they ratified the importance of having representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean present, providing a regional perspective.
Finally, to close the extraordinary meeting of the Group of Experts, details were finalized for the 2023 Regional Water Dialogues that will be organized by ECLAC, and which will take place on February 1, 2 and 3, and in which the group Regional experts will be present at the panel “Rain of Solutions to Value Water and accelerate compliance with SDG 6” together with representatives of the private sector and civil society.
