The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will hold from October 24 to 26 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, its thirty-ninth sessionthe most important biennial meeting of this regional commission of the United Nations, where it will deliver to the countries its proposal for strategies for a transformation of the productive structure that fosters economic reactivation on a path of sustainable development.
The event, which will be held in a hybrid way (face-to-face and virtual) from the Kirchner Cultural Center in the Argentine capital, It will bring together representatives of the 46 member states and 14 associate members of ECLAC, as well as researchers, academics, representatives of civil society and international officials.
The session period offers a propitious instance to analyze relevant issues for the development of the countries of the region and examine the progress of the Commission’s activities. Likewise, it allows the governments of the member states to know, through the examination of the activity report of the Secretariat, the work carried out by ECLAC in the last year and define, through the approval of the work program and the calendar of conferences , the mandates that will guide the future work of the Commission.

After the opening ceremony, the Commission will announce the position paper Towards the transformation of the development model in Latin America and the Caribbean: production, inclusion and sustainability, which will be presented by the Executive Secretary of ECLAC, Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs.
The report analyzes, among other issues, the present and future of globalization, the productive heterogeneity of the region and discusses strategies and policies for inclusive and sustainable growth and development. Analyzes and proposes policies in nine key productive sectors for sustainable growth: the energy transition, electromobility, the circular economy, the bioeconomy, the digital economy, the pharmaceutical industry, tourism, the care economy, MSMEs and the social economy and solidarity. It also presents a set of policy recommendations to address the current situation of low growth, high inflation, and increases in poverty and inequality.
The document will be commented on by a high-level panel, moderated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina, Santiago Cafiero, in which the Nobel Prize in Economics, Joseph Stiglitz, the Professor of Economics of Innovation will participate. and Public Value at University College London, Mariana Mazzucato, the Minister of Finance and Public Credit of Colombia, José Antonio Ocampo, and the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Rebeca Grynspan.
Also, there will be a dialogue between the foreign ministers of Latin America and the Caribbean, together with other high authorities of the region and political personalities from outside the region, including the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, to reflect around the regional context, economic recovery and international cooperation in the face of a new multilateralism.
In addition, ECLAC will present its activity report with the work carried out in 2021, including that of its subsidiary bodies, and the mandates that will guide its work during the next biennium (2023-2024) will be defined.
