ECLAC will present a special report on the opportunities and challenges that lithium offers for Latin America and the Caribbean

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will present next Thursday, July 6, a new special report entitled Extraction and industrialization of lithium. Opportunities and challenges for Latin America and the Caribbeanin which he examines the role of lithium-producing countries in the region (mainly Argentina, Bolivia and Chile) in the global value chain of lithium-ion batteries (main current use of lithium), as well as the regimes of governance, regulatory and fiscal that determine the operation of mineral exploitation in the countries of the so-called lithium triangle.

The presentation of the report will take place through a hybrid press conference (face-to-face and virtual) offered by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC, at the organization’s headquarters in Santiago, Chile, at 11:00 am local ( UTC/GMT -4:00).

The report includes public policy guidelines that can contribute to a productive development agenda around lithium, as well as the industrialization of this and other minerals in clean technologies for the energy transition and electromobility. The details of these recommendations, as well as the main indicators related to the economic activity around this mineral, will be released by the Executive Secretary of ECLAC at the press conference.
