ECLAC participates in strengthening cluster initiatives in Panama

On February 8, Marco Llinás, director of the Productive and Business Development Division of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), participated in the launch event of the project “Productive Panama III: Strengthening three cluster initiatives” . Program which has the objective of contributing to the productive and sustainable development of Panama, through strengthening the capacities of cluster initiatives in three areas: health services, fruits for export and logistics.

The official signing of the document took place at the bank’s Country Office, led by the CAF representative in Panama, Lucía Meza, and the executive president of the FCDS, Jorge Arosemena R.

The cooperation between the CAF and the FCDS seeks to facilitate the implementation of the first phase of the strategic agendas designed for the three strengthened cluster initiatives, as well as to develop and implement a consolidation and information management tool that supports decision making. . Also, it is planned to design and support the implementation of a strategy to link to new markets and to document the experience of the three productive areas for dissemination.

This collaborative work, which is promoted by ECLAC, through the Platform of Cluster Initiatives and Other Territorial Productive Articulation Initiatives, seeks to interconnect people and institutions through the generation of collective actions that adopt a territorial approach and participatory management of common actions. . Likewise, the City of Knowledge Foundation (FCDS) plays a fundamental role as promoter of these territorial productive articulation initiatives (IAPT), which have given rise, with the support of ECLAC, to the IAPT Community.

Regarding the implementation of the strategic agendas, it is estimated to result in at least three collaborative initiatives in each supported cluster; a minimum of 12 companies benefited directly and 24 indirectly, and at least 12 officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI) and other public entities involved in supporting cluster initiatives, as indicated by the CAF.

This productive coordination initiative in Panama has the support of linked public and private institutions, such as the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI), the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT), private sector unions and the academy such as: the Competitiveness Center of the Western Region (CECOMRO), the Network of Competitiveness Centers, Fedefarma, the Technological University of Panama (UTP), the Santa María la Antigua Catholic University (USMA), among others.

For ECLAC, it is crucial that projects like this are developed in the region, in order to give continuity to the work that is sought to be strengthened through the Platform, in the collaborative work between promoters and operators of the different cluster initiatives, in order to promote the productive development of each territory.
