Between February 28 and March 2, 2023, the Eighth session of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas and the Caribbean and which was sponsored by the Government of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay as host country and the cooperation of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).
The eighth meeting of the Regional Platform represents an opportunity for governments, intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, civil society, the scientific-technological community, cooperation agencies and donors, as well as other relevant actors in Latin America and The Caribbean, exchange experiences and facilitate decisions to promote the implementation of the Regional Action Plan (RAP) for the implementation of the Sendai Framework. It also helps all these actors share experiences and good practices, acquire a greater impact on knowledge transfer and capacity building, and reaffirm their ongoing commitment to disaster risk reduction at the regional, national, and local levels.
Representatives of the Member States, intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, civil society, cooperation agencies, United Nations agencies, donors, development banks, the scientific and technological sector, academia and universities, financial and planning institutions, as well as other actors participated. relevant in Latin America and the Caribbean. Participation was face-to-face and virtual.
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC)through the Statistics Division, participated in the side event Statistical data and geospatial information for disaster risk reductionwhere geospatial information platforms and institutional arrangements that serve as a basis to facilitate the availability of data generated by various institutions were presented, as well as their distribution, exchange and use to guarantee that the entities involved in Disaster Risk Management (DRM) ) can have quick and timely access to quality data for decision making.
Also, ECLAC’s Statistics Division participated in the Learning Lab Disaster Statistics whose objectives were focused on developing national capacities in the compilation of disaster-related statistics to improve disaster management and promote risk-informed sustainable development in the countries; and facilitate national monitoring and reporting on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
