The Acting Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Mario Cimoli, expressed his solidarity with the people of Cuba for the accident that occurred on Friday, August 5, at an oil storage facility in the city of Matanzas , which has left one person dead, several missing and more than a hundred injured.
In a letter addressed to President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the United Nations official expressed his support for the families and friends of the victims, and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Likewise, he expressed his confidence that regional and international support will allow a prompt control of the fire, which will prevent the tragedy from spreading further.
“We are certain that the country and the people of Cuba will know how to overcome this tragedy and prevent similar catastrophes from happening again. On this path, you can count on the company and unrestricted support of ECLAC”, he expressed.

On behalf of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and myself, I would like to convey through you to the people of Cuba, our deep sorrow at the tragedy that began last Friday, August 5, at an oil storage facility in the city of Matanzas, which has left one person dead, several missing and more than a hundred injured.
This dramatic incident not only affects Cuba and its people, but also the rest of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, our inclusive and supportive region.
From ECLAC we want to express our solidarity and support for the families and friends of the victims, and we wish a speedy recovery for the injured. Likewise, we trust that regional and international support will allow a prompt control of the fire, which will prevent the tragedy from spreading further.
We are witnesses to the recognized mettle that characterizes those of us who were born in our beloved Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as our ability to overcome adversity and learn from it. We are also aware of the warrior nature of the Cuban people, that noble people who have carved out their own original destiny.
