On September 2, 2024, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), through the Division of Productive and Business Development, met with representatives of the recently established Ministério do Entrepreendedorismo, da Microempresa e da Empresa de Pequeno Brazil port.

The Brazilian delegation composed of Tadeu Alencar, executive secretary of the MEMP and Luciana Rocha Mancini, head of the Special Advisory for International Affairs, presented the main lines of the Ministry to support the development of micro and small businesses in Brazil. Among the main axes, support for credit, the business environment and internationalization stood out. Regarding this last issue, the executive secretary highlighted that smaller companies currently, although they represent approximately 40% of exporting companies, contribute with close to 1% of Brazil’s exports.

In turn, the director of the Division, Marco Llinás, presented ECLAC’s vision of policies for productive development, which are detailed in the first issue of the document “Overview of Productive Development Policies in Latin America and the Caribbean, 2024: How to promote the great productive transformation that the region requires?” This Panorama emphasizes the importance of coordinated action by the entities that contribute to the design and implementation of these policies, from the public, private, academic and civil society sectors, both at the national and subnational levels.

The meeting allowed for discussing possible lines of cooperation between the two institutions, identifying spaces for convergence on topics such as international trade, the digitalization of companies and the promotion of business productive articulation, with this last point being at the center of the action promoted by the ECLAC through the Platform of Cluster Initiatives and Other Territorial Productive Articulation Initiatives (IAPT).
