The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development establishes a transformative vision towards economic, social and environmental sustainability. It represents a new roadmap that includes a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is a historic opportunity for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), since it addresses priority issues for the region, such as the reduction of inequality, inclusive economic growth and climate change, among others.

At the same time, awareness of the weaknesses of the current economic system has increased in the region, especially in its social and environmental aspects, since economic growth models based on the export of natural resources and poorly processed products have reached their limits. . For its part, climate change and the implementation of the Paris Agreement is an increasingly emerging issue for the region.

However, the capacities of these countries to implement the 2030 Agenda in a holistic and coherent way, which makes it possible to formulate and put into practice strategies that promote structural change that is respectful of the environment, socially acceptable, inclusive and progressive, are still limited.

To support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement in a coherent, intersectoral and holistic manner, the 2018-2020 Program works in 9 pilot countries throughout its execution and focuses on three thematic areas or clusters:

The issues are worked on by three interdisciplinary teams, in which different ECLAC divisions participate to advise the governments of the region. Through the Program, the aim is to expand professional and institutional capacities in these three areas, with the objective that the selected LAC countries have implementation strategies for the 2030 Agenda, to promote structural change that is respectful of the environment, socially acceptable, inclusive and progressive.
