ECLAC and GIZ organize a dialogue that relates the mining regulations of the Andean region, the OECD due diligence guidelines and international voluntary standards

The virtual seminar was developed as a side event during the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Forum on Responsibility in Mineral Supply Chains (2024), details can be found here link.

The objective of the virtual session was to provide opportunities to analyze and discuss current and emerging initiatives that seek to intertwine the local benefits of responsible mining in Latin America and the Caribbean with the challenges of the energy and climate transition around the world.

The webinar was inaugurated by Carlos de Miguel, Officer in Charge of the Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division of ECLAC. Subsequently, Martin Kohout, an ECLAC official, provided a general overview of the international and national initiatives relevant to the promotion of responsible mining in the Andean countries. For his part, Juan Eduardo Ibañez, lawyer from the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) of Chile, presented the comparative study between Chilean and Peruvian regulations with the requirements audited by the IRMA responsible mining standard, prepared by the PUC and GIZ. This study, unpublished at the time of the webinar, will be published in the weeks following the event and will be available on the MinSus project website: https://minsus.net/

After the presentations, a dialogue was opened between experts in this matter where, in addition to Juan Eduardo Ibáñez, Carla Moscoso, Head of Division of the Ministry of Justice of Chile, Ana María Zamora, Vice President of the Mining Association of Colombia and Sebastian Weber, OECD Policy Analyst.

The event closed with the final reflections of Nicolas Maennling, Principal Advisor of the MinSus – GIZ project.
