The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported this Thursday that the Ebola outbreak that was declared on September 20 in Uganda already accumulates 64 cases and 25 confirmed deaths from the virus.
The regional director for Africa of the WHO, Matshidiso Moeti, has communicated the balance of victims, one month after the outbreak, through a virtual press conference in which he has estimated 2,000 people identified as contacts.
Moeti has assured that “the situation on the ground is evolving rapidly”, however, he has praised the performance of the Ugandan Ministry of Health, which has shown, in his words, “remarkable resilience and effectiveness” by facing “constantly the changing situation” .
In this line, he has positively valued the health authorities, who “have rapidly strengthened surveillance.”
“As always, community engagement is crucial to building trust, cooperation and understanding on the measures, which are there to protect and save lives,” concluded the WHO representative in the region.
This same Thursday, a team led by the Ugandan Minister of Health, Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, visited the Entebbe National Isolation Center, where there is currently a confirmed Ebola patient receiving treatment.
Aceng, who has reported that the patient is progressing, wanted to thank the health workers “for their selfless work and sacrifice in managing Ebola” at the center he visited.
