Earthquake shakes Los Angeles area

An earthquake shook the Los Angeles area on Thursday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 and was centered 4 miles (7 kilometers) north of Malibu, with a depth of about 7 miles (11 kilometers).

The quake was felt as far away as 42 miles (72 kilometers) away in Orange County.

The California governor’s emergency department said it was monitoring the quake and assessing damage.

The area has been hit by several quakes this year. A magnitude 4.4 quake in August was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, rocking buildings, rattling dishes and setting off car alarms.
