DRC claims to have shot down six kamikaze drones launched by Rwanda in North Kivu province

MADRID Dec. 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) claimed this Thursday to have shot down six kamikaze drones supposedly launched by Rwandan troops against the province of North Kivu (east), scene of fighting between the Congolese military and the rebel group Movement 23 March (M23).

“On December 25, the elite units of the DRC Armed Forces shot down six kamikaze drones of the Rwandan Army special forces near the town of Mambasa,” said the Army spokesman in this area of the African country, Mak Hazukay, as reported by the 7sur7 news portal.

Kinshasa’s accusations come more than a week after the DRC denounced a “deliberate blockade” by Kigali of the trilateral summit in Angola to address the conflict, warning that “this irresponsible stance endangers peace and compromises the main progress recorded”.

For its part, the Rwandan Foreign Ministry attributed the cancellation of the trilateral summit to the lack of “consensus” at the ministerial meeting held in Luanda on Saturday, in which the DRC refused to open direct talks with the M23 to reach an agreement. peace agreement.

The M23 is a rebel group composed mainly of Congolese Tutsis that operates mainly in the province of North Kivu. After a conflict between 2012 and 2013, a peace agreement was signed, although the group launched a new offensive at the end of 2022, which has caused a diplomatic crisis between the DRC and Rwanda over their support for the group, raising fears of a conflict large scale.

Rwandan authorities, for their part, accuse the DRC government of repressing Congolese Tutsis with the support of armed groups such as the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), founded and composed mainly of Hutus responsible for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
