Draghi denies asking to remove Conte from M5S
June 30. () –
The Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, has indicated this Thursday at a press conference after the Council of Ministers in Rome that “there is no Government” without the 5 Star Movement (M5S) after an internal crisis in the coalition has motivated his hasty return from Madrid, where the NATO summit is being held.
“I remain optimistic. The Government is not taking risks. This Government cannot be done without M5S (because) it was born with (it). It is not satisfied with external support,” said Draghi after the leader of the 5 Star Movement (M5S ), Giussepe Conte, has accused the Italian president of “asking for his head”.
The schism within the M5S has come about because the leader of the 5-star Movement –a party that belongs to the government coalition led by Draghi–, and also former Prime Minister of Italy, Giussepe Conte, has accused the Italian ‘premier’ of asking the founder of the party, the comedian Beppe Grillo, to remove Conte from the party.
“Grillo told me that Mario Draghi asked him to remove Giuseppe Conte from M5S because he was inappropriate,” sociologist Domenico De Masi assured in an interview with the newspaper ‘Il Fatto Quotidiano’ and that he later used Conte to attack Draghi. The Palazzo Chigi (the Italian presidential office) has denied the statement a few hours later.
After De Masi’s statement, the leader of the M5S has held a meeting with the president of Italy, Sergio Matarella, in which he has expressed “the seriousness of the situation”, although he has not announced a departure of his party from the Executive.
“I HAVE NEVER MADE THOSE STATEMENTS”
“I have never made these statements. They tell me that there is objective evidence: we are going to see it, I wait for it. I did not even think about going into the internal affairs of a party. I think Grillo also denied it last night,” Draghi emphasized, according to picked up the AdnKronos news agency.
Before returning to Italy, the Italian prime minister stressed to the press at the NATO summit that he had spoken with Conte and that “the government was not at risk.” In this sense, Draghi remarked this Thursday that “the M5S has made important contributions to government action in recent months.” “I am sure that it will continue to give them”, he has affirmed.
Thus, the Italian Prime Minister recalled that Italy is now facing many challenges, including the war in Ukraine or the rise in energy prices. “The important results on the international front and on the national front are the merit of this majority”, he settled.
