At least 40 people are missing this Wednesday in the state of Virginia after a storm that unleashed heavy rains and flooded areas in the south of the state, local authorities and the United States meteorological services reported.
A statement issued this morning by the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office said authorities were responding to multiple reports of flooding in the area since Tuesday.
The office later reported dozens missing and more than 100 houses destroyed. The authorities specified that the missing were more than 40, but no dead person had been registered.
A tweet from the Virginia State Police detailed that air and ground teams were collaborating in rescue actions for the victims in the area.
“A command post in Buchanan County, Virginia, in support of our river water, aviation, and ranger rescue teams with Virginia Department of Emergency Management local services personnel, to locate/rescue individuals affected by floods. Please do not drive / walk through running water. #DeseLaVueltaNoSeAhoge”, reads the message.
According to the weather channel El Canal del climabetween 10 and 15 centimeters of rain fell in the area overnight and the damage was spread over an area of 16 square kilometers.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency.
