January is often considered a dead month for entertainment. Few, if any, major films come out, to the point where the month is often called “Dumpuary” because studios literally scrap their least interesting projects during these otherwise boring and unimportant 30 days. Chances are you won’t find much entertainment at the movies, although Streaming could offer some interesting movies this January..

What better time than now to check out some underrated cinematic gems, especially since no other major film will compete for your attention? From romantic comedies produced during the Golden Age of Hollywood to blood-soaked action fests, these streaming gems are begging to be watched. They may be well hidden, but they’re certainly worth your time, especially in a month when there’s not really much else going on.

I capture the castle It has everything one could ask for in a romantic period drama. Two sisters in search of love? Check. Lush production values? Check. A cold, rainy English countryside landscape? Check. A story of woe, love and longing set amid the struggles of gentile poverty in the 1930s? Check!

A brilliant cast, led by the unfairly underrated Romola Garai and a baby-faced Rose Byrne, and including an anti-type Henry Thomas and the always scene-stealing Billy Nighy, bring this charming story to life with all the wit and the charm that only the English can muster.

I capture the castle is devastatingly sweet, witty and absolutely irresistible, a classic period drama that will have everyone tapping their feet with excitement. And yes, that is a very young Henry Cavill as Garai’s love interest.

I capture the castle is available for broadcast in peacock.

The talented Bill Skarsgård He had a very interesting 2024. He starred in one of the biggest box office and critical disappointments of his career, the much-derided remake of the crow, but ended on a high note by bringing to life the sinister Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’ acclaimed remake of Nosferatu. However, he also starred Boy kills the worldpossibly the most underrated action movie of 2024.

The film sees Skarsgård as the titular boy, a mute young man who goes on a bloody rampage against the family that controls his town and is apparently responsible for the deaths of his mother and sister. Exciting, crazy, splashed with blood and with a biting and absurd sense of humor, Boy kills the world is an electrifying action spectacle that is perfect for injecting some adrenaline into this otherwise lethargic month.

Skarsgård carries the film on his broad shoulders, along with a cast of scene-stealers, including a particularly sassy Michelle Dockery and a hilariously ridiculous Sharlto Copley.

Boy kills the world iis available for stream on Hulu.

Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn are two of the best and most recognized stars of classic Hollywood. They worked together on several films, perhaps the most notable The history of Philadelphia. However, one of his most underrated efforts in the 1938 romantic comedy holidaydirected by the equally iconic George Cukor.

In the film, Grant plays Johnny, a free-thinking, energetic man who develops feelings for his fiancée’s (Hepburn) outspoken younger sister. holiday It doesn’t really reinvent the romantic comedy, but it doesn’t need to. Grant and Hepburn are very good together, and the script gives them enough to make the film elevated by their mere presence.

The pair play off each other beautifully, playing out variations on the tropes that would cement them as cinematic icons while also finding new ways to charm and entertain. holiday is a wonderful post-New Year’s movie and a safe bet for those looking for an old-fashioned romantic comedy.

holiday is available for stream on Filo.
