Donald Trump’s lawyer appears in court in case of confidential documents

One of former President Donald Trump’s lawyers arrived at the federal court of the District of Columbia in Washington on Friday morning to answer questions from a grand jury investigating the handling of classified documents found at the former president’s residence in Florida.

Evan Corcoran arrived at the Court early in the morning, and went to the courtroom where the three judges were to hear his testimony in private. According to federal regulations, the events inside the room are not public knowledge.

The lawyer left the building about three hours later and declined to answer questions from the press about the investigation.

A week ago, a federal judge ruled in favor of the special prosecutor investigating the case, Jack Smith, forcing Corcoran to answer additional questions in a case in which the jury has been hearing evidence for months.

In the past, Corcoran had invoked attorney-client confidentiality law to avoid testifying and providing information to investigators. However, the prosecutor managed to get federal judge Beryl Howell to require Corcoran’s testimony on suspicion that she could be using said legal advice to promote a crime.

A search warrant affidavit posted last august It showed that investigators were looking into possible violations of multiple crimes, including obstruction and willful withholding of national defense information.

Corcoran is relevant to research because he drafted a letter that was delivered to the department last June stating that a “diligent search” of classified documents had been conducted in response to a subpoena. The letter was accompanied by the return of approximately three dozen documents with classified marks.

Prosecutors have said in court documents that they developed evidence showing that additional classified documents remained at the property. The FBI returned with a search warrant on August 8 and located an additional 100 classified documentsas the documents show.

Another Trump attorney, Timothy Parlatore, confirmed in an interview with Associated Press on Friday that he had voluntarily testified for about six or seven hours before the grand jury in December to answer questions about the Trump team’s compliance with the efforts of the Department of Justice for retrieving classified documents.

Smith is also examining attempts by Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Trump faces a separate investigation by the Manhattan district attorney’s office into hush money payments during the 2016 campaign, which seems to be close to completionas well as an investigation in Atlanta into efforts to reverse Trump’s electoral defeat in Georgia.
