Donald Trump calls for resilience and national unity after attack

Former US President Donald Trump on Sunday called for unity and resilience, after escaping a shooting that took his life during a campaign rally, amid his attempts to return to the White House. The attack, which left him injured but “well,” sparked worldwide condemnation.

The Republican presidential nominee said the top of his right ear was hit in the attack. “I knew immediately something was wrong because I heard a whirring sound, gunshots and immediately felt the bullet go through my skin,” he said in a post on his social media site Truth Social.

Then on Sunday, Trump wrote that “only God prevented the unthinkable from happening.”

“At this time, it is more important than ever that we stand together, and that we show our true character as Americans, by remaining strong and determined, and by not letting evil win,” he said.

Meanwhile, his wife, former first lady Melania Trump, used her account on social media to call for “compassion” and “empathy.”

“We are all human, and fundamentally and instinctively we want to help each other. American politics is just one vehicle that can improve our communities. Love, compassion, kindness and empathy are necessities,” exhorted the woman.

The FBI identified the shooter early Sunday morning as Thomas Matthew Crooks20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The agency said the investigation is ongoing.

The Secret Service denied allegations by some Trump supporters that it had refused requests from the campaign for additional security.
