Former President and current presidential candidate Donald Trump, who is running in the US election campaign, was attacked on Saturday while giving a speech in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The incident occurred in the middle of the presentation of a graphic about border crossings when loud bangs began to sound from the crowd.
Security immediately removed Trump from the stage. Later images showed the former president with blood on his face, reaching with his right hand toward his neck.
In a statement issued after the attack, Trump said he was “doing well” and was being checked out at a local medical facility. A spokesperson for the candidate added: “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their swift action during this heinous act. He is doing well and is being checked out at a local medical facility.”
According to AP, after the shots were fired, Trump hid behind the podium as security agents rushed the stage and shouts could be heard from the crowd. The explosions continued as the agents guarded him. The crowd applauded when Trump stood up and raised his fist, before his motorcade left the venue.
Trump’s exact condition is not immediately known. Police began clearing the fairgrounds shortly after Trump left the stage. The U.S. Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies have not responded to messages seeking additional information.
