The former president of the United States, Donald Trump, published this Tuesday on his social network Truth Social the receipt of a letter from the prosecutor’s office, announcing that he will be criminally charged for the riots during the attack on the Capitol. In the American justice system, when someone receives this type of letter, it generally means one step prior to indictment.

With insults and a lack of legal grounds, the former president called Jack Smith, Joe Biden’s Justice Department prosecutor, who sent him the letter, “disturbed,” and stated that he, Trump, was “the target of the Grand Jury investigation.” about January 6.
This is a third accusation, which Trump reiterates as an action from President Biden because, if this arrest is concluded, “Biden would finish off his first political opponent.” “Nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before. The Department of Justice has become a weapon for the Democrats, an absolute weapon,” he added.
The former president, a favorite among Republicans for the 2024 presidential nomination, said he was given “a very short deadline of four days” to appear before a grand jury, “which almost always means an arrest and indictment.” but the Washington Post newspaper claims that this is not systematic.
“This witch hunt is all about election interference and a complete and total use of law enforcement as a political weapon,” he continued.
In addition, Trump argued that he has a “right to protest” because he is “fully convinced” that the elections “have been rigged and stolen.”
On January 6, 2021, thousands of Trump supporters wreaked havoc and attacked the Capitol in Washington, the temple of American democracy, to try to prevent the electoral victory of Democrat Joe Biden from being certified. More than 1,000 people have been arrested since then and some 350 of them accused of assaulting the police or resisting authority.
Corruption in the electoral process
Parallel to the receipt of the letter, on Tuesday, in the state of Michigan, sixteen supporters of the former president were charged with forgery for joining a “false voter” scheme. The objective of said scheme was to reverse the electoral defeat of the Republican politician in 2020 and proclaim Trump as the winner in 7 states.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said the 16 defendants illegally claimed to be state representatives when the electoral college votes were counted. “This plan, to reject the will of the voters and undermine democracy, was fraudulent and without legal basis,” she added.
The charges are the first against plan participants. The failure of the “fake voters” scheme was a key cause for the violent assault on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, the date on which Biden was certified the victor.
About three weeks before Jan. 6, the men met “undercover” in the basement of the Republican Party headquarters in Michigan and signed several certificates declaring they were electors for that state, Nessel said.
The defendants face multiple counts of conspiracy, forgery and fraud, which can carry up to 14 years in prison each.
This announcement came the same day that Trump said he had received a letter from the prosecution suggesting he is likely to be criminally charged for the Jan. 6 voter fraud scheme and subsequent attack on the Capitol.
