( Spanish) – The Dominican Republic government announced on Wednesday that it had implemented, with the support of U.S. agencies, an operation in which a group of at least 10 people were arrested for alleged drug trafficking and more than 2,000 kilograms of cocaine were seized.
The National Drug Control Directorate reported that 37 simultaneous raids were carried out early Wednesday morning with the participation of more than 400 members of the Armed Forces.
In a statement, the agency explained that for months they have been investigating a criminal network dedicated to “hiring for hire, compulsory collection and money laundering.” According to the department, for the first time in a collaborative process, “common evidence provided by another country, in this case Colombia at the request of the Dominican Republic, was used to strengthen the investigation and prosecution of an international drug trafficking organization” in the country.
Dominican authorities added that the dismantled network had allegedly transported illegal substances from Colombia and Venezuela, transported in speedboats and fishing boats through the Dominican Republic, with final destinations in Puerto Rico, the United States and the European Union.
