Doctors in England accept government offer of 22% pay increase

September 16 () –

The British Medical Association announced on Monday that 65.97 percent of its members had voted in favour of accepting the government’s proposal, which includes a 22 percent pay rise for resident doctors in England.

“The votes have been counted. 65.97% of you have voted to ACCEPT the Government’s proposal,” the union and professional association posted on its X account.

“To the resident doctors of England, thank you for voting in the referendum and making your voice heard. Your committee met this afternoon to ratify the result,” he added.

A total of 45,830 resident physicians participated in the online consultation between August 19 and September 15, representing a 69 percent participation rate.

“This agreement marks the end of 15 years of wage declines and the start of two years of modest pay rises just above inflation. There is still much to be done,” said the co-chairs of the committee of resident doctors, Robert Laurenson and Dr Vivek Trivedi, quoted by Sky News.

The union points out that even after the increase, wages will still be 20.8 percent lower than in 2008 due to inflation.
