Activities are a way for Discord users to hang out online in a more interactive way, something the service hopes to achieve by integrating YouTube for shared video viewing. There are also minigames. All Discord users have access to two activities: Watch Together (YouTube) and Putt Party with a game of golf. To expand the number of titles available with Poker Night, Sketch Heads, Chess, Land-io, Letter League and more, at least one person must be a Nitro subscriber ($9.99/mo).
To start a Discord activity you have to click on the new rocket-shaped icon that appears in the voice chat and the two options available today will be displayed: Watch Together and Putt Party. If the activity is already running, the same icon will serve to join it. Watching videos on YouTube with Watch Together in sync with the rest of the chat users is no secret, while the Putt Party options will vary depending on the minigame, which may or may not have a user limit.
It remains to be seen how far the activities will go. Discord has shown its willingness to work with developers to expand the options of this feature, which could eventually be associated with online gaming services. streaming to go beyond the minigames.
Discord has also introduced the Nitro Basic subscription, which for $2.99 per month offers a spartan version of Nitro. With Nitro Basic you can use custom animated emojis anywhere and share files up to 50 MB. Access to more activities, streaming in 4K and 60 FPS, file shares up to 100MB as well as all other server enhancements and customization are reserved for Nitro subscribers who pay $9.99 per month.
