Diocese of Culiacán in Mexico calls for “staying united” in the face of escalating violence

( Spanish) – The diocese of Culiacán in Sinaloa led a mass for peace this Sunday after a weekend plagued by violence that left more than 10 homicides.

Jesús Herrera Quiñonez, bishop of Culiacán, said this Sunday that we must not allow “one group or two groups or three of those people, to divide our society, our community. Let us remember that there is a saying that says live and you will win, that as a community we remain united.”

In a statement on Thursday, Herrera Quiñonez urged those who commit crimes and create fear to stop and reminded them that God “will hold them accountable for their actions.”

“We have been suffering from fear due to the arrest of people, the theft and burning of cars and some deaths, and the warning that these events will continue in the following days,” said Herrera Quiñonez.

The state in northeastern Mexico has been the scene of intense violence. There have been arrests, murders, clashes and riots such as burning cars in recent weeks. From September 13 to 15, the Sinaloa Prosecutor’s Office recorded 11 homicides.

Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya announced on Thursday through a video posted on his X account, the suspension of classes in the municipalities of Culiacán, Elota, Cosalá and San Ignacio due to insecurity. Despite having cancelled the celebration of September 15, to commemorate the Independence of Mexico, a ceremony led by Rocha Moya was held on Sunday.
