Dina Boluarte will reform the Constitution if Congress does not approve early elections

'The country does not give more': how feasible is the advancement of the elections in Peru to 2023?

First modification:

The Peruvian president presses Congress to approve this Monday an advance of the general elections for the month of October this year. If they do not do so, her government will immediately present two projects so that they can be held anyway at the end of 2023 and also make a constitutional reform.

“Responsibility for approving early elections this year depends solely and exclusively on Congress,” Dina Boluarte declared in a televised message.

“If the consensus in Congress does not prosper, the Executive “will immediately be presenting the two legislative initiatives as a matter of urgency,” warned the leader.

“Vote for Peru in favor of the country by advancing the elections to 2023 and let’s tell all of Peru with the greatest responsibility that we are all leaving,” he said.

The president of Parliament, José Williams, a retired right-wing soldier who would replace Boluarte in the event of his resignation, also asked parliamentarians on Twitter on Sunday to “reflect responsibly on the decision that will have to be made” on Monday.

On Saturday, a proposal for early elections presented by deputy Hernando Guerra García, from the right-wing Fuerza Popular (FP) party, was rejected by 65 votes in favor and 45 against.

The left had insisted on introducing an amendment that provided for a referendum on a Constituent Assembly, which contributed to the failure of the bill. (with AFP)
