Díaz-Canel applauds Borrell's visit as a historic "milestone" in relations between Cuba and the EU

The top European diplomat considers the inclusion of Cuba on the US list of countries that sponsor terrorism “outrageous”

The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, hailed the first visit to the island of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, as a historic “milestone” for bilateral relations and the development of the Political Dialogue Agreement and Cooperation signed between both parties in 2017.

“I think it is a moment that marks a milestone in the deepening of relations between Cuba and the European Union,” Díaz-Canel declared this Friday as soon as he received Borrell at the Palace of the Revolution in Havana, within the framework of the Third Joint Council between Cuba and the European Union.

Borrell, for his part, explained to the Cuban president the enormous efforts that he has to make to defend relations between Cuba and the EU, especially knowing that it is one of the four countries that the United States currently maintains on its list of sponsoring countries of international terrorism (together with Syria, Iran and North Korea), a decision that the diplomat cannot understand.

“I have to make an effort to maintain the unity of everyone in the vote in the United Nations against the blockade, which we have achieved so far; and so that everyone understands that including Cuba on the list of countries that support terrorism is a barbarity and has no justification,” Borrell said in statements collected by Cubadebate.

Borrell has explained that during his visit to the island he has spoken with the Cuban authorities about “political freedoms”, “human rights” and the “situation created, before, during and after” the anti-government protests of July 11, 2021.

“We cannot ignore the fact that we have differences (…) but the EU has neither the capacity nor the will to impose changes in Cuba, but we do want to have a framework for dialogue that allows us to talk about everything that unites us and differentiates us without taboos or prohibitions,” said the leader of European diplomacy in statements collected by Diario de Cuba.
