Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel will meet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, next week in Moscow, the RIA news agency reported on Wednesday, citing the island’s ambassador.
Shortly before leaving Havana, Díaz-Canel said on his Twitter account that since Wednesday he has embarked on a tour that will take him to four nations: Algeria, Russia, Turkey and China, “in response to the official invitations issued by the leaders of those nations.
The president added that the tour will address essential issues “fundamentally related to the energy sector” in search of alternatives to reinforce its obsolete electrical network.
On Tuesday, the seventh floating power plant, leased to the Turkish-based company Karadeniz Holding, whose objective is to supply additional megawatts to the national electric power system, arrived in Havana.
The energy problems on the Caribbean island, which cause annoying daily blackouts, are one of the most painful symptoms of a deeper financial crisis due to US sanctionsthe COVID-19 pandemic and also inefficiency in economic management, among other causes.
