Dialogue: Latin America and the Caribbean in the value chains related to lithium and other minerals for the energy transition

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Undersecretariat for International Economic Relations (SUBREI) of Chile and the Deutsche Gelleschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), within the framework of the Regional Cooperation Program for the Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources in the Andean Countries (MinSus), will hold the Dialogue: Latin America and the Caribbean in the value chains related to lithium and other minerals for the energy transition, in a hybrid format in the Celso Furtado Auditorium of ECLAC and through the platform Zoomon August 19, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Chile

The increasing demand for minerals critical to decarbonising economies through renewable energy and electromobility technologies, such as solar panels, wind turbines and lithium-ion batteries, poses challenges such as the need to implement new mining projects and expand existing ones, and the environmental impacts and social conflicts arising from mining activity.

In this context, it is important to promote dialogue that highlights this situation on the urgency of innovative approaches, participatory mechanisms, improvements in efficiency and sustainability, and recycling and circular economy initiatives to address this demand in a sustainable manner.

The Dialogue aims to:

  • Launch the publication “Development prospects for lithium-related value chains in Chile and South America”.
  • To gather ideas for regional integration and international cooperation on priority actions that promote equity and justice in value chains and that support mineral-producing countries that can feed into the following United Nations international initiatives: the United Nations Framework on Just Transitions for Critical Minerals, the UN Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Minerals for the Energy Transition.

During the meeting, a space will be provided for exchange, discussion and the collection of proposals and recommendations that promote productive development and the addition of local value, technical training and technology transfer.

The event is aimed at members of civil society, representatives of public and private companies, policy makers, processing, value chain promotion and management of small-scale mining, and those interested in the challenges and issues of critical minerals for the energy transition.
