DHL Express and UOB partner to reduce carbon footprint of international shipping through sustainable aviation fuel

DHL Express, the world’s leading provider of international express services, and UOB, one of ASEAN’s leading banks, have signed a strategic agreement under DHL’s GoGreen Plus service to co-invest in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for UOB’s international parcel deliveries. Through this programme, UOB expects an estimated annual emission reduction of approximately 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e1).

Launched in February 2023, DHL’s GoGreen Plus service has helped more than 40,000 customers in Asia Pacific reduce their carbon emissions by using SAF, which can reduce the lifecycle emissions of typical aviation fuel by around 80% compared to traditional aviation fuel. This demonstrates the strong demand for sustainable solutions from DHL customers across a range of sectors. UOB and DHL have been working closely since 2022 to reduce UOB’s carbon footprint in international parcel deliveries and has introduced the GoGreen Plus service since March this year to use SAF.

“DHL has a clear sustainability roadmap, and we understand our role and responsibility in making air transport more sustainable. We are proud that UOB has chosen us as a partner to help them reduce the environmental impact of their international transport activities,” said Ken Lee, CEO of DHL Express Asia Pacific.

“We are seeing strong uptake of the GoGreen Plus service in the region, demonstrating the willingness and appetite of shippers for sustainable logistics solutions. SAF is currently the best option for reducing carbon emissions in aviation, and we are pleased to be taking the lead.”

Environmental sustainability is at the heart of the banking and financial sector

According to Dentsu’s 2023 Banking and Finance Industry Report, 63% of Asia-Pacific consumers recognise and feel the impact that climate change may have over the next five years. As a result, consumers expect brands and their governments to take strong action to address sustainability. Indeed, Asian banks are also taking action and committing to net-zero emissions. According to an assessment by the World Wildlife Fund, net-zero emissions commitments among the banks assessed increased from 15% to 39% between 2021 and 2022.

Singapore’s UOB and South Korea’s Woori Card announce pioneering reciprocal card partnership

In 2022, UOB announced its goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 for its financed emissions, while supporting sustainable practices among its customers and the real economy, and driving socio-economic growth in Southeast Asia.

DHL’s GoGreen Plus service enables UOB to reduce its Scope 3 emissions not effectively funded by SAF. In addition, UOB will receive monthly updates detailing the carbon reductions of its parcel shipments through a free Carbon Footprint report and quarterly certification of the emissions reductions achieved by an independent auditor.

“As our operations continue to expand regionally, we are committed to aligning our procurement activities with our sustainability strategy and goals. UOB is the first local bank in Singapore to proactively address emissions from our international shipping and transport activities through carbon offsetting, as part of reducing our supply chain footprint. The collaboration with our logistics partner, DHL, supports the expanded use of SAF as a best alternative to decarbonise supply chains. This is an important step towards achieving sustainable sourcing, which is integral to UOB’s ethos of responsible business practices,” said Marcus Lai, Head of Corporate Real Estate Services, UOB Finance & Corporate Services Group.

In 2022, UOB announced its goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 for its financed emissions, while supporting sustainable practices.

The GoGreen Plus service is one of DHL’s global initiatives to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

This is made possible through strategic partnerships with bp and Neste to purchase up to 800 million liters of SAF and with World Energy to provide up to 668 million liters of SAF. As a leading logistics company, DHL remains committed to decarbonizing its business operations and continuously developing innovative green solutions for the logistics sector.
