Season of the Deep, or better known in Spanish as Temporada de las Profundidades, is shaping up to become one of the most important events in the narrative of destiny 2. One of the factors pointing in that direction is the return of Sloane, who was missing and many feared she might be dead. But why come back? Bungie already explained it to us.
Recently at LEVEL UP we had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion with Bungie to discuss the narrative of Season of the Depths. There we asked its creatives about the return of Sloane and the reason why they decided that she was a central character in one of the most important events of destiny 2.

According to Nikko Stevens, Bungie’s narrative designer, they originally didn’t have Sloane as part of their plans for Season of the Deep. That being said, once they decided that the Guardians would return to Titan they realized they had to bring her back. After all, it was necessary to explain what had happened to him.
“Yeah, I think an interesting point here is that originally Sloane wasn’t going to be a main focus of the season, when we were coming up with [Temporada de las Profundidades], Sloane wasn’t even up for discussion. But once Titan came up, I remember Tom [Farnsworth]Robert [Brookes]raph [Ahad] and I had some early conversations about the narrative of the [Temporada de las Profundidades]. And I remember that Robert and I were very insistent on bringing Sloane back. Because we thought that if we went to Titan, we had to tell what happened to her, since he was there. We couldn’t just say that she died and leave that story at that,” Stevens said.
It is worth mentioning that Bungie also saw a lot of potential in Sloane’s story since it would serve as a vehicle for them to tell what happened on Titan. Not only this, since he also turned out to be the perfect character to serve as an intermediary between Ahsa and Vanguard.
“We felt that Sloane had a lot more to her narrative, that she had a story to tell and would be a good medium to convey everything that happened on Titan. And especially when we started working on Ahsa, we knew we needed someone to go between Ahsa and Vanguardia. Not just because, you know, a giant space whale worm shows up and Vanguard is probably a little skeptical of what it has to say. But also because she brings this human connection that allows us to personalize the Ahsa experience in a way that audiences can understand and pick up on as well,” Stevens explained.

Sloane returned to destiny 2 as a changed character
As part of the interview, Robert Brookes, Bungie’s narrative designer, explained that Sloane did not return as the same character we met in destiny 2. After all, a lot has happened to him in recent years, which means a major evolution in his character.
Brookes told us that with Sloane they want to explore the issue of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to demonstrate the impact that the events on Titan had on her. Likewise, she will also have a major visual change to reflect her partial transformation into the Taken.
“I didn’t want to just bring back the same character that we had in the original campaign of destiny 2, I wanted to find ways to work with and develop her as someone who had changed a lot because of her experience, and really have the chance to expand her character beyond just being ‘the Deputy Commander.’ I wanted to give it more nuance, more depth, and more opportunities to tell different kinds of stories with it in case we decide to use it later. And I think that giving her that connection to the Taken and that visual change was something very important to me, to do justice to her character and to take advantage of the possibilities that were available for a character like her, who had been more on paper and on the page than on screen, and bring that back to the surface,” Brookes told us.
Lastly, Stevens noted that Sloane’s return is also important because it will reflect some of the themes they want to explore in Season of Depths. She also believes that she is deeply tied to the fight against The Witness for a good reason.

“Throughout this year and into the future, we’ve been telling the story of how individuals can be heroes, how they can change the course of a situation. The important thing is that when everyone comes together in a unified front, this is how real change is achieved, this is how hope becomes real. And I think what we wanted to represent was this character who was the victim in a sense of the first real attack by The Witness, and now he’s coming back to join the ranks again and be one of the people leading the charge against The Witness with the information. that it brings us, with the capabilities it brings us and allowing us to take another step forward to defeat El Testigo”, he concluded.
