Unfortunately, toxicity persists as one of the problems that plague the gaming industry. It is very common for angry players to lash out at developers to express their dissatisfaction with a game feature or other issues. A recent case shows that such intolerant actions should not be tolerated or go unpunished.

This story started last year, when Bungie’s community manager shared a fanart of destiny 2 by user UhMaayyze, who describes himself as a “talented black fan.” From then on, the player Jesse James Comer began to pester and harass the worker who highlighted the content.

According to documents released at trial, the racist player doxed the community manager and began sending offensive text and audio messages to his phone. On one occasion he even asked that in all Bungie games only black characters could be attacked.

Unfortunately, the situation worsened soon after. What happens is that Jesse James Comer threatened the employee’s wife and sent her racist messages.

Through an anonymous phone number, the player behind the toxic behavior ordered a pizza from the worker’s house to show that he knew his address and provoke an altercation between the delivery man and the employee.

“After working with many professionals to identify the culprit, a racist human being named Jesse James Comer, we filed a lawsuit in King County Superior Court to hold him accountable for the damages Bungie suffered due to his sociopathic conduct,” said Kathryn Tewson. , one of the lawyers involved in the case.

“Comer did not show the same enthusiasm to present himself [en el juicio] to plead your case than when you caused the initial damage. Yesterday [el 11 de julio]the Court granted our judgment motion, making it responsible for the almost $500,000 USD that Bungie accumulated in investigation, protection and legal costs, ”Tewson complements on his Twitter account.

This victory could set a precedent. According to the lawyer, the Court recognized a new grievance that condemns cyber and telephone harassment. In theory, this means studios can take action against gamers and users who harass developers.

User UhMaayyze, who shared the fanart last year, reacted to the verdict with joy. In a post on Twitter, he commented that he will play again destiny 2.
