Dozens of protesters have gathered again this Friday before the Swedish embassy in Baghdad in a protest called by the influential cleric Muqtada al Sadr against the burning of a Koran during a rally held on Tuesday in Stockholm.
The protesters, many of them with copies of the Koran in their hands, have defended the closure of the Embassy and have demanded that the Iraqi government break its relationship with the European country before a large security device in the Green Zone of Baghdad, where are the governmental and diplomatic headquarters.
“Those who call for freedom of expression must be fair and reject the crime of burning the Holy Quran, which involves inciting hatred against millions of people,” Al-Sadr said in a speech delivered on his behalf by Sheikh Mahmud al-Jayashi. according to the INA news agency.
As the day before, when a similar rally was held, although it ended with dozens of protesters storming the Embassy building, the cleric charged against the LGTBI community, alleging that their participation in society is an “assault on the core of la vida”, calling on the crowd to burn the rainbow flag during the event.
The Swedish Police authorized a demonstration on Wednesday in which one of its assistants burned a copy of the Koran, a gesture that has caused discomfort in different Arab and Muslim countries, which have called Swedish diplomats to ask for explanations for what happened. .
