Democrat Katie Hobbs took office Monday as the new governor of the state of Arizona, in the US, during a private ceremony at the state Capitol, surrounded by her parents, husband and two children.
Hobbs was sworn in by Roopali Desai, a newly confirmed judge on the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit who previously represented Democrats in election cases.
The new governor, who served as Arizona’s secretary of state, narrowly defeated Republican Kari Lakea former television host endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
Hobbs becomes Arizona’s 24th governor and the first Democrat to hold the position since 2009.
Also formally inaugurated Monday were Democrats Adrian Fontes as secretary of state and Kris Mayes as attorney general, who each defeated Trump-backed Republicans who refused to concede and unsuccessfully challenged their losses in court.
Hobbs takes control of a state with a strong economy and a solid financial position, with a large budget surplus expected for the next fiscal year. The new Legislature meets for the first time next week.
