The director of the Iraqi Civil Defense, Kazem Bohan, has announced that the rescue services of Kerbala province have found two other bodies in the rubble of a Shiite shrine that has collapsed due to a landslide in Iraq, so the last balance has risen to seven people.
Bohan has recognized, according to the Al Sharquiya channel, that the rescue teams face difficulties due to the large number of rocks, so they work very carefully to preserve the lives of the trapped people.
The governor of Kerbala, Nassif al Jatabi, has reported the formation of an investigation committee to find out the circumstances of what happened, according to the newspaper ‘Baghdad Today’.
A delegation representing the Iraqi cleric Muqtada al Sadr, a strong man in the country after the victory of his Sayirún coalition in the legislative elections last year, arrived at the scene of the incident on Monday, according to the INA news agency.
Al Sadr himself asked the Iraqi authorities on his official Twitter profile for an “immediate investigation” so that “the corruption” that has affected the institutions does not also affect “mosques and places of worship.”
“We offer our condolences to the families of the victims. We ask God to beg them for patience and consolation, and we demand an immediate and serious investigation from the Government in order to reveal the truth, so that corruption does not affect mosques and places of worship. , just as it already affects State institutions and Ministries,” he added.
Rescue services in the Iraqi province of Karbala earlier confirmed at least five dead: three women, a man and a child, as well as five trapped in the rubble of the Shiite shrine.
The landslide at the shrine, which contains a water spring considered by Shiites to be a resting place for their first imam, Ali bin Abi Talib, in the 7th century, was most likely due to moisture buildup, according to early published research. by the official Iraqi news agency INA.
The rescue is taking place slowly because “the large excavation teams cannot reach the site”, the head of Karbala’s Civil Defense, Brigadier General Taher Al Zubaidi, explained to INA, so the removal of the rubble “is is doing by hand”.
Iraq’s Shiite Dowry Office denied any responsibility in the incident, saying the shrine is not registered to or managed by the office, and called on the authorities in charge to prevent such incidents from happening again.
