The Indonesian authorities have reported this Tuesday that the death toll from the floods that have affected the province of West Sumatra has increased to 50, while another 27 people remain missing, in a storm of heavy rains that are add the torrents of cold lava from the Merapi volcano.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has indicated that it has recorded 20 deaths in the Agam region, 19 in Tanah Datar, eight in Padang Pariaman, two in Padang Panjang and one in Padang city. Meanwhile, the authorities continue searching for the missing, according to a BNPB report released through its website.
In addition, there are 37 injured and 3,396 people have been displaced from their homes, so the Government’s efforts are not limited to restoring access to roads and evacuating victims, but also trying, as the agency has indicated, to meet the basic needs of affected communities.
During the weekend there have been torrential rains that have flooded homes and rice fields. The authorities have urged the population living on the banks of the rivers to be alert to possible floods.
